Cosa distingue un "sistema totalitario" da un "regime autoritario"? E quali sono gli elementi che rendono il totalitarismo e l'autoritarismo modelli di organizzazione politica peculiari e specifici, con proprie caratteristiche interne e con autonomi meccanismi di funzionamento? Quali e quanti sono stati, nel corso del Novecento, i sistemi politici classificabili come "non democratici"? E quale Ăš stata la loro diffusione nelle diverse aree del mondo? È a queste domande – al centro da decenni della riflessione scientifica – che cerca di rispondere questo saggio, considerato sin dalla sua uscita nel 1975 un classico della scienza politica contemporanea. Sulla base di un vasto materiale empirico, ricorrendo alla comparazione storica e a un rigoroso sforzo di concettualizzazione, Linz sviluppa una articolata classificazione dei regimi "non competitivi", distinguendo tra una varietĂ  di tipologie (dal totalitarismo all'autoritarismo, dal sultanismo al post-totalitarismo) e numerosi sottotipi (dai sistemi totalitari ideologici alle democrazie razziali, dai regimi autoritari di mobilitazione ai sistemi totalitari di partito). Quello che risulta Ăš un quadro della storia politica del Novecento per molti versi innovativo, dal quale emergono con chiarezza le molteplici sfide e i differenti rischi che le democrazie hanno dovuto affrontare e superare prima di affermarsi e consolidarsi su una scala sempre piĂč vasta. Ma la partita, avverte Linz, non Ăš affatto conclusa. Totalitarismo e autoritarismo possono costituire, ancora oggi, una minaccia potenziale, soprattutto per quei sistemi democratico-competitivi alle prese con la crisi economica e con gravi problemi di funzionalitĂ  e legittimitĂ . Questo libro, scritto con il rigore dello scienziato e animato da una grande passione per la libertĂ , ci aiuta a conoscere meglio i "nemici della democrazia".
