Un uomo in età matura, molto legato alle sue deprecabili abitudini - fumatore, bevitore, gran mangiatore di carne -, viene improvvisamente allarmato dall'anomalo funzionamento del suo cuore. È sposato, ha sei figli - tre grandi e tre piccoli -, ed è pertanto sottoposto a forti sollecitazioni per un radicale cambiamento dello stile di vita. Con sforzi immani riesce a smettere di bere e fumare. Ma poi ci ripensa proprio quando la voglia di alcol e sigarette sta ormai svanendo. Si sente snaturato, troppo diverso dall'immagine che ha di sé stesso costruita e cristallizzatasi nel corso del tempo. La vita è una, piuttosto faticosa, costellata di preoccupazioni e avara di soddisfazioni, invariabilmente breve anche quando relativamente lunga. Urge allora trovare un nuovo equilibro, una via lungo la quale la paura del baratro non lo renda insensibile alle piacevolezze e distrazioni del percorso.
