THE LITTLE GIRL FOUND
Ā Ā All the night in woe
Ā Ā Lycaās parents go
Ā Ā Over valleys deep,
Ā Ā While the deserts wee
Ā Ā Tired and woe-begone,
Ā Ā Hoarse with making moan,
Ā Ā Arm in arm, seven days
Ā Ā They traced the desert ways.
Ā Ā Seven nights they sleep
Ā Ā Among shadows deep,
Ā Ā And dream they see their child
Ā Ā Starved in desert wild.
Ā Ā Pale through pathless ways
Ā Ā The fancied image strays,
Ā Ā Famished, weeping, weak,
Ā Ā With hollow piteous shriek.
Ā Ā Rising from unrest,
Ā Ā The trembling woman pressed
Ā Ā With feet of weary woe;
Ā Ā She could no further go.
Ā Ā In his arms he bore
Ā Ā Her, armed with sorrow sore;
Ā Ā Till before their way
Ā Ā A couching lion lay.
Ā Ā Turning back was vain:
Ā Ā Soon his heavy mane
Ā Ā Bore them to the ground,
Ā Ā Then he stalked around,
Ā Ā Smelling to his prey;
Ā Ā But their fears allay
Ā Ā When he licks their hands,
Ā Ā And silent by them stands.
Ā Ā They look upon his eyes,
Ā Ā Filled with deep surprise;
Ā Ā And wondering behold
Ā Ā A spirit armed in gold.
Ā Ā On his head a crown,
Ā Ā On his shoulders down
Ā Ā Flowed his golden hair.
Ā Ā Gone was all their care.
Ā Ā āFollow me, ā he said;
Ā Ā āWeep not for the maid;
Ā Ā In my palace deep,
Ā Ā Lyca lies asleeā
Ā Ā Then they followĆØd
Ā Ā Where the vision led,
Ā Ā And saw their sleeping child
Ā Ā Among tigers wild.
Ā Ā To this day they dwell
Ā Ā In a lonely dell,
Ā Ā Nor fear the wolvish howl
Ā Ā Nor the lionās growl.
THE CHIMNEY-SWEEPER
Ā Ā A little black thing among the snow,
Ā Ā Crying! āweep! weep! ā in notes of woe!
Ā Ā āWhere are thy father and mother? Say! āā
Ā Ā āThey are both gone up to the church to pray.
Ā Ā āBecause I was happy upon the heath,
Ā Ā And smiled among the winterās snow,
Ā Ā They clothed me in the clothes of death,
Ā Ā And taught me to sing the notes of woe.
Ā Ā āAnd because I am happy and dance and sing,
Ā Ā They think they have done me no injury,
Ā Ā And are gone to praise God and His priest and
king,
Ā Ā Who made up a heaven of our misery. ā
NURSEāS SONG
Ā Ā When the voices of children are heard on the
green,
Ā Ā And whisperings are in the dale,
Ā Ā The days of my youth rise fresh in my mind,
Ā Ā My face turns green and pale.
Ā Ā Then come home, my children, the sun is gone
down,
Ā Ā And the dews of night arise;
Ā Ā Your spring and your day are wasted in play,
Ā Ā And your winter and night in disguise.
THE SICK ROSE
Ā Ā O rose, thou art sick!
Ā Ā The invisible worm,
Ā Ā That flies in the night,
Ā Ā In the howling storm,
Ā Ā Has found out thy bed
Ā Ā Of crimson joy,
Ā Ā And his dark secret love
Ā Ā Does thy life destroy.
THE FLY
Ā Ā Little Fly,
Ā Ā Thy summerās play
Ā Ā My thoughtless hand
Ā Ā Has brushed away.
Ā Ā Am not I
Ā Ā A fly like thee?
Ā Ā Or art not thou
Ā Ā A man like me?
Ā Ā For I dance,
Ā Ā And drink, and sing,
Ā Ā Till some blind hand
Ā Ā Shall brush my wing.
Ā Ā If thought is life
Ā Ā And strength and breath,
Ā Ā And the want
Ā Ā Of thought is death;
Ā Ā Then am I
Ā Ā A happy fly.
Ā Ā If I live,
Ā Ā Or if I die.
THE ANGEL
I dreamt a dream! What can it mean?
And that I was a maiden Queen
Guarded by an Angel mild:
Witless woe was neāer beguiled!
And I wept both night and day,
And he wiped my tears away;
And I wept both day and night,
And hid from him my heartās delight.
So he took his wings, and fled;
Then the morn blushed rosy red.
I dried my tears, and armed my fears
With ten thousand shields and spears.
Soon my Angel cam...
