Nella Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana è conservato un manoscritto (Pal.gr. 117) che contiene un'orazione funebre scritta in greco da un oratore anonimo. L'orazione non è un'opera inedita, ma ebbe diverse edizioni, purtroppo non del tutto fedeli al testo: solo il primo editore, il Morel, fra l'altro ebbe visione diretta del manoscritto. Destinatario dell'orazione era indicato dai vari editori come Costantino II: gli errori di trascrizione del testo hanno, però, indotto ad una interpretazione diversa, e studiosi tedeschi hanno pensato che il destinatario fosse Teodoro Paleologo, morto nel 1448. Certamente il copista è del XV secolo, ma dal suo stile si può evincere che il testo è stato copiato qualche anno prima della morte di Teodoro Paleologo. Anche l'esame del linguaggio ci porta ad escludere che l'orazione possa riferirsi al Paleologo. D'altra parte, i riferimenti storici e giuridici fanno pensare ad un testo composto nel IV secolo: ad esempio i riti matrimoniali e funebri, il culto del sole, la correggenza imperiale. Il destinatario era allora Costantino II.
