Rifacendosi al confederalismo democratico elaborato dal leader curdo Abdullah Òcalan, detenuto in un carcere turco dal 1999, la popolazione del Rojava ha iniziato ad autogovernarsi attraverso una rete di assemblee e consigli in cui vengono decisi aspetti cruciali della vita sociale come l'autodifesa militare e l'amministrazione della giustizia. Questa visione non-statale dell'organizzazione sociale, fortemente influenzata dal municipalismo libertario di Murray Bookchin, si rivela rivoluzionaria anche per il contributo fondamentale delle donne, che partendo dalla critica della disparitĂ  uomo/donna sono arrivate a identificare nello Stato il principio organizzatore da abbattere.
