Questo atlante della flora e della fauna, frutto di anni di studio e della passione degli autori per il mondo marino, ha come obiettivo di mettere in risalto la complessa biodiversità dei mari italiani e di farne conoscere le meraviglie. Il volume descrive oltre 650 specie, dalle alghe ai mammiferi, ed è preceduto da un'introduzione sui principali ambienti presenti lungo le coste italiane, dalla superficie alle maggiori profondità , in un'alternanza di aree sabbiose, ciottolose e rocciose, caratterizzate da habitat marini peculiari, come per esempio il coralligeno. Per maggiore facilità , i mari italiani sono stati suddivisi in nove settori biogeografici, considerando come confini le aree di transizione che variano in conseguenza delle variazioni climatiche. Inoltre, si è ritenuto importante riportare le varie convenzioni internazionali, che salvaguardano le specie e gli ambienti in cui vivono. Ogni capitolo è suddiviso in una parte introduttiva, in cui i Phyla descritti hanno figure esplicative dell'anatomia degli organismi, e in una sequenza di schede su ogni specie. A sua volta la scheda di ogni specie è strutturata in descrizione, habitat, distribuzione e note legislative. Il testo è corredato di numerose fotografie nelle cui didascalie sono apposti, quando necessario, simboli che indicano se la specie è protetta, pericolosa, soggetta a raccolta regolamentata o aliena. Completano il volume un utile glossario, una bibliografia e sitografia di riferimento e un dettagliato indice analitico.
