BETWEEN THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST AND LENT AND BETWEEN PENTECOST AND ADVENT
The following readings are used from the day after the Baptism of Christ.
Week 1: Monday between 8 and 14 January
Year 1
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews.
Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of Godโs glory and the exact imprint of Godโs very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say,
โYou are my Son;
today I have begotten youโ?
Or again,
โI will be his Father,
and he will be my Sonโ?
And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,
โLet all Godโs angels worship him.โ
This is the word of the Lord.
Hebrews 1.1โ6
Responsorial Psalm
R* The Lord is king: let the earth rejoice;
[let the multitude of the isles be glad].
Psalm 97.1
Clouds and darkness are round about him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
The heavens declared his righteousness,
and all the peoples have seen his glory. R
Confounded be all who worship carved image
and delight in mere idols.
Bow down before him, all you gods. R
Zion heard and was glad, and the daughters of Judah rejoiced,
because of your judgements, O Lord.
For you, Lord, are most high over all the earth;
you are exalted far above all gods. R
The Lord loves those who hate evil;
he preserves the lives of his faithful
and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. R
Psalm 97.1โ2, 6โ10
Year 2
A reading from the First Book of Samuel.
There was a certain man of Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham son of Elihu son of Tohu son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives; the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
Now this man used to go up year by year from his town to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the LORD. On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. So it went on year after year; as often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, โHannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?โ
This is the word of the Lord.
1 Samuel 1.1โ8
Responsorial Psalm
R I will offer to you a sacrifice of thanksgiving:
[and call upon the name of the Lord].
Psalm 116.15
How shall I repay the Lord
for all the benefits he has given to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call upon the name of the Lord. R
I will fulfil my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of his faithful servants. R
O Lord, I am your servant your servant,
the child of your handmaid;
you have freed me from my bonds.
I will offer to you a sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call upon the name of the Lord. R
Psalm 116.10โ1 5
Year 1 and Year 2
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
After John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, โThe time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.โ
As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake โ for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, โFollow me and I will make you fish for people.โ And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Mark 1.14โ20
Week 1: Tuesday between 9 and 15 January
Year 1
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews.
God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels.
But someone has testified somewhere,
โWhat are human beings that you are mindful of them,
or mortals, that you care for them?
You have made them for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned them with glory and honour,
subjecting all things under their feet.โ
Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying,
โI will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters,
in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.โ
This is the word of the Lord.
Hebrews 2.5โ12
Responsorial Psalm
R* O Lord our governor,
how glorious is your name in all the world!
Psalm 8.1
Your majesty above the heavens is praised
out of the mouths of babes at the breast.
You have founded a stronghold against your foes,
that you might still the enemy and the avenger. R
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have ordained,
what is man, that you should be mindful of him;
the son of man, that you should seek him ou...
