A distanza di ormai quasi quarant'anni dalla sua pubblicazione, avvenuta nel 1981, il Dizionario (noto presso gli studiosi con la sigla DETI) costituisce ancora il principale repertorio di riferimento, nonostante il settore dell'onomastica abbia poi avuto un grandissimo sviluppo all'interno della linguistica. Tra i notevoli pregi del DETI va indicata anzitutto la sua novità: toponimi ed etnici erano infatti stati esclusi fino ad allora dalla tradizione lessicografica italiana facente capo al Vocabolario della Crusca e l'opera ha certamente contribuito al loro inserimento – necessariamente parziale – nei dizionari posteriori. Rilevante anche per imponenza, il DETI offre un repertorio vastissimo (circa 13 000 voci) pressoché completo dei toponimi italiani, corredati dalle denominazioni dei rispettivi etnici e presentati sia nella forma italiana sia in quella dialettale (con indicazioni sulla pronuncia), caratteristica che dimostra quanto l'opera sia frutto di una ricerca ampia e accuratissima condotta non solo in archivi e biblioteche, ma anche "sul campo" grazie a inchieste e interviste.
