Die von der Zeitgeschichte bislang kaum beachtete Analysekategorie »Behinderung« erschließt einen neuen Blick auf komplexe, gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Zusammenhänge in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Unter der Leitfrage, wie sich die Kategorie »Behinderung« in wissenschaftlichen und politischen Diskursen konstituiert, untersucht Elsbeth Bösl die bundesdeutsche Behindertenpolitik. Die historische Analyse zeigt, dass diese Politik bis Mitte der 1970er Jahre primär auf die funktionale Normalisierung von Menschen mit Behinderungen sowie die Herstellung von Erwerbsfähigkeit und Produktivität gerichtet war.
