About this book
Volume V features the first 304 of the total 632 colour plates of the series, each consisting of 8 photographs and generally illustrating 4 species in dorsal and lateral aspects, respectively. It covers all the primitive families (Orthoceri) from Anthribidae to Apionidae, as well as the Heteromorphi and the subfamilies Amycterinae and Entiminae (Adelognatha) of the Gonatoceri. Two taxonomic indices, one by genus to species and the other by species to genus, conclude the volume.

Plate 1 “Good” Weevils
Control of the water weed Salvinia molesta in Australia by CSIRO-introduced Brazilian Cyrtobagous weevils.
Top figure shows extensive Salvinia infestation in Lake Moondarra, the water supply reservoir for Mount Isa, Queensland.
Bottom figure shows the same area after Cyrtobagous weevils were introduced by CSIRO and had eliminated the vegetation by natural means with a minimum of expense and without the use of chemicals. An estimated 30 000 tonnes of the weed were destroyed by the weevil in less than one year.
Salvinia molesta is an aggressive aquatic fern and is one of the world’s worst weeds. It is a native of Brazil where it is kept under control by native herbivores. It has been introduced to many areas of the world which lack its natural control agents and where environmental damage caused by its unrestricted increase has been enormous. It chokes lakes, reservoirs, slow-moving rivers, irrigation systems, rice paddies, fishponds, etc. with such continuous, metre-thick mats of dense vegetation that they are rendered mostly useless for normal purposes. Moreover, its infestation leads to increases in mosquito populations. The damage it does is of ...
