Wildflowers of the Brisbane Ranges

About this book

The Brisbane Ranges area, situated 80 km west of Melbourne and 30 km north-west of Geelong, is extraordinarily rich in diversity. With basalt grasslands, heathy woodland, alluvial soils, buckshot gravel and granite rocks, it boasts more than 430 species of native plants.

Wildflowers of the Brisbane Ranges contains magnificent photographs of more than 400 species, many of them orchids, including rare and vulnerable species such as the Naked Sun Orchid (Thelymitra circumsepta) and the Hyacinth Orchid (Dipodium pardalinum).

A list of references, colour guide, glossary, comprehensive index and a soil type map have been included, to assist the reader in locating and identifying the different species.

This full colour guide is the culmination of more than a decade of painstaking observation. It will help both the casual visitor and the keen naturalist to locate and identify an extensive range of wildflowers from this exceptional part of Victoria.

Liliaceae

The Lily family, as generally accepted today, is cosmopolitan with about 4000 species in 280 genera. Less widely accepted classifications break the family up into several smaller families. Plants show great variation in growth habit. All are perennial, but many herbaceous species die back annually to underground tubers, bulbs, corms or rhizomes. Other herbaceous species are evergreen, while some develop into woody shrubs or climbers. Leaves may be alternate or opposite (not in native species) or often grow as an erect basal tuft. They may be tough and leathery or more often, soft and grass-like, or sometimes fleshy. The inflorescences usually contain many flowers variously arranged in spikes, racemes, corymbs, umbels or panicles; rarely are the flowers solitary. The flowers are usually bisexual or may be unisexual (with male and female flowers often on different plants) and the perianth can be regular or irregular. Each flower has 3 sepals and usually 3 petals, but the number of p...
