The book of Joshua memorializes a transitional episode in Israel's national history. The heroic figure Joshua leads the new generation of Israel across the Jordan and into the land of promise, conquering Canaanites and overseeing the allotment of the inheritance among the tribes.

Christianity2. The Israelite Tribal Allotments (13:1–21:45)
a. The remaining land (13:1–7)
1. Joshua’s advanced age is consistent with the Pentateuch’s picture of his first appearance on the way to Mount Sinai (Exod. 18:7–13; Josh. 23:1). There, he is already a warrior who is a leader among the people. Add to this the forty years of wandering in the wilderness and the long time (Josh. 11:18) during which Joshua waged war, and the note signals the end of Joshua’s participation in wars of conquest at an age approaching his death at 110 (Josh. 24:29). It introduces a new section of the book.
2. The remaining land describes those towns and regions that lie within the borders of Canaan (Num. 34:1–12) but are not possessed by Israel. Its appearance in verses 2–7 serves as an introduction to what follows (cf. Judg. 1), in the case of Joshua 13–21 the allotments of the land. In Joshua 1:2–4, the account of Israel’s entrance and conquest of the land is also begun by an introduction of Joshua followed by an explicit word from God to him. In chapter 1, the message was an encouragement to conquer the land; in chapter 13, the emphasis is on the land not yet conquered.
For lands of the Philistines and Geshurites, see Joshua 11:22; 12:5. The former dwelt along the sea-coast and the latter were found east of the sea of Galilee.
3. The land of the Philistines is described by a town list composed of their traditional five towns that is summarized in Table 5.
| Table 5: List of Philistine towns (13:3) | ||||
| Verse | Name (NIV) | Arab | Israeli | Grid no. |
| 3 | Gaza (11:22) | T Ḥarube | 099101 | |
| Ashdod (11:22) | Esdûd | T Ashdod | 117129 | |
| Ashkelon | ʿAsqalân | T Ashqelon | 107118 | |
| Gath (11:22) | T eṣ-Ṣâfi | T Zafit | 135123 | |
| Ekron | K el-Muqannaʿ | T Miqne | 136131 | |
Like the list of chapter 12, this one is identified in terms of the leaders of the towns named. Here, however, the word for ‘leader’ is not the one customarily translated as ‘king’ (Heb. melek), but the distinctive word for Philistine rulers (Heb. seren)...
