Community Service Programs in Independent Schools

The Processes of Implementation and Institutionalization of Peripheral Educational Innovations

About this book

Published in 1994, this book examines the processes through which independent school community service programs, as educational innovations, become more or less institutionalized in nine independent schools. The author considers school sponsored opportunities for students to serve in community-based organizations such as hospitals, day-care centres and nursing homes, and the aspects that influence the effectiveness of such programs.

As a result of the study our understanding of the processes and factors that appear to be associated with program institutionalization are deepened. The rationales underlying independent school community programs are also examined. Finally the book raises questions for further research in independent schools regarding the nature of change, the program development process, and the role of affective education.

NAIS Survey

Memo to: The Head of School
From: John E. Bachman, Vice President
Subject: Survey of Community Service Programs in NAIS Member Schools
Date: August 15, 1985
NAIS is conducting a study of community service programs in independent schools. Its objectives are to identify community service programs in NAIS member schools, explain the philosophies that underlie them and describe their varied characteristics. The study will analyze the context in which community service is practiced and the concerns and responsibilities of those who administer these programs. For the purposes of this study, “community service” is broadly defined as service work (paid or unpaid) performed by students for the community outside of school.
This study is part of a national initiative, sponsored by the Ford Foundation, to assess community service in American elementary and secondary education. Information about community service in independent schools will form part of the larger analysis, and NAIS will distribute a special report to the membership based upon the information you provide.
We hope that the person at your school directly responsible for community service will complete the enclosed questionnaire. Completed questionnaires should be returned in the enclosed envelope as soon as possible and by September 20, 1985.
Mr. Lee M. Levison, a student at Harvard University Graduate School of Education, is the project researcher. Questions about the study should be addressed to him. He may be reached by telephone at (617) 864-7217.
Many thanks for your cooperation in this important endeavor.
