About this book
Originally published in 1984. This annotated bibliography is a comprehensive record of English-language materials which focus on Education in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It provides an excellent resource to scholars, beginning with a long introductory chapter about the role of education, formal and non-formal, in the two Germanies. The socio-historical context is presented but also the authors offer discussion of educational research trends. The bibliography is structured in useful thematic chapters and within the categories then split into those relating to East and West Germany.

BIBLIOGRAPHIES
GENERAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES
1. “Comparative Education Bibliography.” Comparative Education Review.
The Review contains a regular bibliography of all articles in approximately twenty journals. The Review seeks to add journals to those regularly covered, so there is some variation in the journals covered over time. A small number of these journals are in languages other than English. The October, 1980, issue (Vol. 24, No. 3) listed the following journals:
British Journal of Educational Studies
Canadian and International Education
Chinese Education
Comparative Education
Compare
Convergence
Higher Education
European Journal of Education
International Education
International Review of Education
Minerva
Oxford Review of Education
Presence Africaine
Prospects
Revista de Educacion
Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios Educativos
Slavic and European Education Review
Soviet Education
Vergleichende Paedagogik
Western European Education
There is no category specifically related to either of the two Germanies in the bibliography, although the European category is broken down to Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, and Western Europe.
2. Deutsche Nationalbibliographie. Leipzig: Deutsche Buecherei.
Published since 1931, it is a union catalogue of literature published in both German states and literature published in the German language in foreign countries. The bibliography is published yearly by the Deutsche Buecherei in Leipzig, which has served as the national archive for German literature since 1913. In its acquisition program are included the complete German literature, including university publications, translations of German works published in other countries and literature about Germany and important people of all German speaking countries.
3. Deutsche Bibliographie: Halbjahres-Verzeichnis. Frankfurt a/M: Deutsche Bibliothek. Published every six months.
The semi-annual catalogue is divided into two parts. The main part is an alphabetical title catalogue and the second part is a subject index. It is published by the Deutsche Bibliothek in Frankfurt, West Germany, and was created in 1946 by an agreement of the city, the West German Book Traders Association, and the British and American military authorities. In 1969 it was converted into a legal federal institution with claim to deposite copies from the Federal Republic. Its aim is the same as that of the Deutsche Buecherei in Leipzig, East Germany, acting as the central agency for the registration of all new publications.
4. Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC).
ERIC is a nationwide American information network for the dissemination of educational information. The ERIC system was begun in 1965 and by 1966 eleven clearinghouses had been established. The first issue of Research on Education was published in 1966. Of greatest value to the researcher is the computer search service. Although foreign materials were not adequately indexed in the beginning, they are becoming more and more complete. The most inclusive descriptor to use for this data set would be the term Germany. No less than 1088 references were indexed from 1972/June 1982.
5. National Union Catalogue. Washington, D.C.: Library of Congress.
The National Union Catalogue contains in its present printed version a photoreduced copy of every Library of Congress card plus copies of cards from over 1,100 North American Libraries. It would be of great help to the educational researcher in verifying titles of works, directing the researcher to the actual location of works, and assisting in bibliographical compilations. The third reason is especially valuable here, because of the lack of bibliographies on special educational topics in Germany.
