Lesson 1

Your amazing brain

Aim: To get curious about how your brain works and its amazing power.

Brain quiz – are these statements true or false?

  1. An adult brain has about 100 billion (100,000,000,000 or 100 thousand million) neurons (brain cells).
  2. Signals in your neurons can travel at the same speed as Formula 1 cars (roughly 100 metres per second or 360 kilometres per hour).
  3. Your neurons create and send more messages than all the phones in the entire world.
  4. You learn by making connections between neurons.
  5. Exercise can help you learn.
  6. An adult brain weighs about 1.3 kilograms (almost 3 pounds).
  7. Your brain uses up 20% of your energy.
  8. Learning makes your brain more powerful.
  9. Your brain is more complex and powerful than any computer ever built.
  10. Your brain still works when you are asleep.1
A bee has 900 brain cells and a brain the size of a grain of salt.

TASK

What does a bee’s brain do? Write a list of all the things a bee’s brain has to think about in order for the bee to survive.
Now brainstorm all the things your brain has to do in a large learning map. (It might help to think about taking in information from the senses, processing it and then telling the body what to do.)

Lesson 2

Three brains in one

Aim: To understand how brains work so that you can increase your ability to self-regulate.
The triune, or three-part, brain theory was developed by Dr Paul MacLean in the 1950s.1 This is a long time ago, but it is still a useful model to help us understand our reactions and how learning works. MacLean suggested that there are three parts to the brain:
P – Primitive brain – also known as the reptilian brain, responsible for monitoring personal survival and ‘fight or flight’ instinct.
E – Emotional brain – governed by the limbic system, which is located in the centre of the brain, it’s responsible for memory, emotion, values.
T – Thinking brain – the neocortex (thinking cap) where higher order thinking skills and those governing speech take place.
The P.E.T. acronym makes it easier to remember.
