Preface to the Fiftieth Edition

The inaugural 1968 edition of Spon’s Mechanical and Electrical Services Price Book was published in response to the trend for tender enquiries to include mechanical and electrical Bills of Quantities and as a result of the growth of cost planning and cost control in the design stage of building works. It was recognized that without data obtained from detailed pricing, it was not possible to ‘pre-plan expenditure for these services with the same degree of confidence as for the remainder of the building work’ when building services ‘account for a large and increasing proportion of building costs - 25 to 40% for many building types.’

The intention of the 1968 edition was for the information provided to allow a Bill of Quantities to be priced and provide a ‘reasonably accurate estimate of the likely cost of a project and to give supplementary information which will enable the reader to make adjustments to suit his own requirements’.
