TERM 1: POEMS ON A THEME (Easier)

Six Ways of Looking at the Moon

1. The moon is a
pebble thrown high
onto the dark tarmac
of the night.
2. The moon is a
thumbprint stamped
on an ink pad.
3. The moon is a
giant’s white thumbnail.
4. The moon is a
ghostly galleon
on the dark sea.
5. The moon is a
hole left by a careless tailor
in a dark canvas.
6. The moon is
a silvery c.d.
playing endless silence.

TERM 1: POEMS ON A THEME (Harder)

The Moon

What’s the moon doing
Up so soon?
It’s early afternoon
And there it is,
A ghost-moon,
Fooling about
In the sky …
Is it playing a joke?
Will owls patrol fields in broad daylight?
Will the night staff clock on for duty?
Will bats swoop across playgrounds for midges?
Whatever is the matter –
Has the moon gone mad as the hatter?
Will the sun retaliate –
Stay up late,
And appear at midnight
To lighten the lanes,
To frighten the shadows away?
If daylight struck at midnight –
Would cats creep back, confused?
Would the dawn chorus start up, hours early?
Would night nurses clock off
and catch the night bus home,
bewildered by the town clock?
Yes, what’s the moon doing
Mucking about in the daylight?

TERM 1: POEMS ON A THEME – WISHES AND DREAMS (Easier)

I Wish …

I wish I could be small enough
To wear a foxglove for a hat.
I wish I could sleep all night
Under a roof tile and chatter
To the sparrows that nest there.
I wish I could be a dragonfly
And hover like a miniature helicopter
On the school pond.
I wish I could hide inside
A daffodil’s trumpet and keep the world at bay.
I wish I could wear a snail’s shell
To protect me from angry words.
I wish I could be a note
In an eagle’s call as it hovers
High above the mountain’s edge.
I wish I could blossom on a gorse bush
And smell of yellow coconut.
I wish I could be an apple seed
So that I could grow an orchard.
I wish I could be the pause
Just before an unkind word is spoken
So that I could stretch the pause for ever.
I wish that I could be
The moment when a laugh takes root
And blossoms in your mouth
And I’d stay there for ever
Trapped in that second of sweet light.
