Based around thirty themes, this practical resource provides flexible and adaptable ideas for groupwork sessions. The themes in this book: can be adapted and developed to match the exact needs and interests of the participants; aim to generate and inspire group facilitators to think broadly and creatively, and to feel confident in using the culture and history of their geographical area to enrich the work they do with participants; enable participants to explore, develop and reflect upon their hidden, unidentified or unacknowledged strengths, transferable skills and knowledge; have a variety of alternative or additional ideas, and many are accompanied by worksheets; and include colour, television, soaps, touch, mirrors, maps, weather and many more.

MAIN THEME
40 minutes
Introduction
Using the range of product packaging, ask each participant to choose something. Ask them to say why they chose it, and what they think the manufacturer’s reasons were for choosing that particular packaging. Invite participants to give their opinions.
Discussion
If every bar of chocolate was wrapped in white paper and had black writing, would this affect your purchase?
Less challenging
Choose a colour, and ask each participant to think of everything they can associate with that colour.
More challenging
Ask participants to think about a world without colour as a basis for discussion.
Creative options
Using two cameras, one with black and white film, the other with colour, arrange for the participants to take photos of the same person, object or scene and make comparisons. If it is not possible for participants to take photographs themselves, prepare the two sets yourself. As a quicker alternative, you could also photocopy coloured photographs. Gather together written resources. Poetry where the writer has made great use of colour would be particularly useful. Ask each participant to write a line for a group poem, based on a colour of their choice.
CLOSING
5–10 minutes
Summary
Ask each participant to think about an object, room or car, for example, where colour is the primary factor when they think of it. Ask them to briefly describe the item.
