Questo non fermò la sua volontà di essere, almeno con il pensiero, nei luoghi esotici in cui ha deciso di ambientare le sue avventure, narrate con maestria, nella sua copiosa produzione di romanzi. Riuscì a narrare di luoghi mai visti di persona, arricchendoli con accurate descrizioni, grazie allo studio di mappe nautiche e alla attenta lettura di manuali e cronache di viaggio.
