Act One
Scene One
Auckland, 15 February 1951.
A wharf. There is a large notice, painted in white on a blackboard: ‘WORK IS OFFERED SUBJECT TO ACCEPTANCE OF NORMAL HOURS OF WORK INCLUDING OVERTIME IF REQUIRED’.
CLIFF, GUS, and TWO MEN stand looking at the sign. CLIFF goes. GUS and the TWO MEN go into a huddle to discuss future plans.
In NELL and CLIFF’s kitchen, NELL is sewing at an electric sewing machine. She is making a skirt for her daughter CHRISTINE. She finishes a side seam, cuts off the cotton and holds up the skirt. On the radio Mario Lanza is singing ‘The Loveliest Night of the Year’. When CLIFF enters, NELL gets up and turns the radio off.
NELL: It’s on then.
CLIFF: Yes.
NELL: Oh! She is angry. She puts the sewing machine away, taking the cotton off the spool and putting the lid on, through the following conversation.
CLIFF: The union’ll see us right.
NELL: I suppose they’ll put food in the kids’ mouths and shoes on their feet!
CLIFF: They’ve said they’ll see us right and they will.
NELL: You’d believe anything!
CLIFF: I know you’re worried.
NELL: Too right I’m worried. How long is this going to go on?
CLIFF: Till the shipowners give us a decent wage.
NELL: A long time then!
CLIFF: Nell. I’ve tried to explain. I don’t know what else I can do.
NELL: You could go to work!
CLIFF: I can’t.
NELL: Well then?
CLIFF: I’m sorry Nell.
CHRISTINE and DI, NELL’s twin daughters, aged 13, run in from school.
CHRISTINE: Mum! Mum! Save me!
CHRISTINE is chased by DI. She runs to NELL and hides behind her. DI tries to catch her. NELL is an unwilling piggy-in-the-middle.
NELL: Here! Cut it out! What are you doing! Diana, Christine, I said cut it out!
DI: She’s got my pin-up!
