The encyclopedia is completed by articles to scan rather than to read. §13.1 lists important general books and periodicals (not only current ones) in the history of mathematics. There follows in §13.2 a chronology of some principal births, deaths, publications and (more rarely) other events; and in §13.3 a concise record of basic facts about the major mathematicians. The authors are listed in a similar way in §13.4; finally, §13.5 is a general index of persons and subjects.
13.1
Select bibliography of general sources
This article provides an introduction both to the literature in the history of mathematics and to bibliographical sources for history and for mathematics itself. Items are ordered alphabetically by author or title, as appropriate. Limitations of space have forced selection to be severe, and omissions should not be taken as value judgements. For a higher degree of detail see Dauben (1.1) and May (1.5), both of which also list some major manuscript collections. See also the sources department of Historia mathematica (2.9). Many mathematical items are among the thousands of original printed books and periodicals in microform in D. Roller (ed.) 1968ā, Landmarks of Science and Landmarks II, New Canaan, CT: Readex.
