Talkabout for Children: Developing Self-Awareness and Self-Esteem is a bestselling professional workbook supporting educators and therapists who deliver social and relationship skills groups for children with social, emotional or behavioural difficulties.
Self-awareness and self-esteem is an essential prerequisite to developing social skills and so this book is an excellent first step to any social skills programme. This resources creates the foundation of the Talkabout heirachy, where self-awareness comes before non-verbal skills and non-verbal comes before verbal, with assertiveness coming last.
Resources include:
an assessment framework
planning and evaluation forms
a three-term intervention plan for schools
over 40 structured activity sessions focussing on self-awareness and self-esteem
all the supplementary handouts and images needed to deliver the sessions.
This second edition is presented with full-colour illustrations and handouts, and includes a new introduction by Alex Kelly reflecting on her own experiences of using the resources since they were first developed.

The aim of this topic is to help the children to get to know each other using activities that describe their likes and dislikes. Some of the things that they talk about in these first few sessions may be used later on in future sessions but the objective of this topic is to get the children to start talking about themselves. This topic also introduces the children to the activity ‘How am I feeling?’ which you will then use at the beginning of every session.
Objectives:
To introduce awareness of self and others
To help the group to gel
To get to know a little bit about each other
To introduce the activity ‘How am I feeling?’
To introduce the activity ‘How did I do?’ (optional)
To introduce ‘My record of achievements’ (optional).
Materials:
Print out and laminate activities as appropriate
You will need Velcro to make up some of the activities
Print out and photocopy worksheets as appropriate
You will need red, orange and green stickers for the ‘How did I do?’ activity, and fun stickers for the certificates of achievement.
Timing:
This topic will take up to four sessions to complete.
Activity
Teacher notes
How am I feeling?
(Activity 1)
Choose the appropriate feeling board for your children. Pass the board around the group and ask the children to select how they are feeling. Can they share with the group why they are feeling that way?
Who am I?
(Activity 2)
Photocopied cards are placed in the centre of the circle or handed to each group member in turn. Group members take turns to share something about themselves. Some of these ideas could be made into a group poster, for example ‘These are the things that make us happy/sad/worried…’
How did I do?
(Activity 3)
Ask the children to think about how they have found the session. Pass the board around the group and ask the children to select how they think they did.
My record of achievements
(Activity 4)
Create a certificate or record of achievement for each child. This can be used weekly to add stickers to and then to laminate at the end of the level as a certificate for completing the work.
My likes and dislikes
(Activity 5)
The children share things that they like and things they don’t like. Can they find similarities with others in the group?
Picture me!
(Activity 6)
The children create a poster with pictures or drawings to say something about themselves. They share this with the group.
