Esta es una obra que hurga en la posibilidad, en las realidades y en los deseos de la revolución continental en su primer momento, entre 1790 y 1830. Dos asuntos son de notar en Jugar con fuego. Uno es que el autor, a diferencia de buena parte de la historiografía tradicional y hasta de muchos estudiosos contemporáneos, considera que el ciclo de su estudio arranca con la revolución haitiana. El otro, estrechamente vinculado con aquel, es la inclusión en su mirada de las Antillas españolas, cuyo desenvolvimiento por esos años no puede entenderse al margen del proceso bélico y político que sacudía a Tierra Firme: las islas no estuvieron al margen del proceso general, aunque ni en Cuba ni en Puerto Rico se abriera la opción emancipatoria.
