Durante el siglo XX, la ciudad fue el lugar donde se manifestaron de manera espacial los lenguajes polĂticos, un sitio de encuentro de culturas polĂticas elitistas y plebeyas, cuyas expresiones fueron parte primordial de los movimientos polĂticos de la Ă©poca. El gaitanismo, el fenĂłmeno polĂtico colombiano mĂĄs significativo en tĂ©rminos de movilizaciĂłn, fue fundamentalmente urbano y se expresĂł de manera especialmente intensa en Santiago de Cali, ciudad que, durante la dĂ©cada de 1940, estaba experimentando las consecuencias del crecimiento poblacional y urbano que sufrĂan las principales urbes latinoamericanas. Este libro muestra cĂłmo se constituyĂł y manifestĂł la ciudad polĂtica durante el auge del gaitanismo en la ciudad de Cali, exponiendo las formas de expresiĂłn de los distintos grupos en la ciudad, la manera como se distribuyeron el espacio y cĂłmo se cargaron de valor simbĂłlico algunos lugares. El gaitanismo caleño se constituyĂł en uno de los movimientos mĂĄs importantes del paĂs, al punto que logrĂł rearticularse despuĂ©s de la muerte de caudillo y solo logrĂł ser contrarrestado en uno de los actos de violencia mĂĄs brutales que se haya registrado en una ciudad colombiana durante este periodo, como lo fue la masacre de la Casa Liberal en octubre de 1949.
