Il libro si occupa dei margini della filosofia, cioè dei punti in cui talvolta essa sconfina dal proprio territorio, o all'opposto subisce invasioni da parte di "non addetti ai lavori". A essere chiamati in causa sono, più specificamente, i rapporti che la filosofia instaura con letteratura e pittura. Si tratta di mostrare, attraverso esempi significativi, come i pensatori dell'ultimo secolo si siano relazionati alle opere di letterati e artisti visivi, o come questi abbiano manifestato interesse per filosofi antichi e recenti. Così, nella prima parte del volume, viene preso in esame il modo in cui Bataille ha reinterpretato Descartes, Char è divenuto amico di Heidegger, Deleuze e Derrida hanno scritto rispettivamente su Beckett e Celan, mentre Lacoue-Labarthe e Nancy hanno riletto i romantici tedeschi. Nella seconda parte, la trattazione verte su Lyotard alle prese con Duchamp, Deleuze commentatore di Cézanne e Bacon, Foucault interprete di Magritte, Derrida di Van Gogh e Nancy di Hantaï. Una fitta serie di interscambi, dunque, che hanno contribuito non poco ad approfondire e rinnovare il nostro modo di intendere sia la filosofia che le arti.
