Se il Dio del Vecchio Testamento lo si può definire "legislatore", in quanto stabilisce un patto con l'uomo e da questo patto fa discendere leggi formalizzate, particolareggiate, il Dio del Nuovo Testamento, invece, lo si può chiamare "educatore", perché non ci detta comandamenti scritti sulle tavole, bensì ci trasmette il suo ammaestramento tramite Cristo e lo imprime nella nostra coscienza. Queste due diverse interpretazioni della figura divina portano con sé un differente modo di intendere: la colpa dell'uomo, il senso del suo pentimento, la possibilità di riscatto. Tutto scaturisce da due distinte letture della natura dell'uomo. Entrambe le visioni di Dio, quella vetero e quella neotestamentaria, però, rapportano l'uomo a Dio in modo tale da far cogliere la nostra fi nitudine e in modo da far avvertire dentro di noi "la disperazione", per dirla con Kierkegaard, che anima il nostro tentativo di tornare a Lui. L'uomo moderno è ancora capace di tollerare un peso di tale portata? A questo punto, la rifl essione si indirizza verso di noi, uomini del nostro tempo.
