Militante antifranchista che in gioventù aveva subito il carcere del regime, nel 1992 Vázquez Montalbán dà alle stampe un romanzo, Autobiografía del general Franco, che come recita il sottotitolo alla prima edizione "riscatta dall'oblio tutta la crudeltà di un'epoca". Si tratta di un'autobiografia fittizia di cui, in questo studio, Silvio Battaglia individua i nodi più difficili da sbrogliare inquadrando fin da subito il romanzo dal lato della sensibilità che forgia l'individuo – in questo caso, il Caudillo – molto prima dell'educazione.
