Negli ultimi decenni, gli studi condotti dalle neuroscienze e dalla psicologia sociale hanno riscontrato che gli stili cognitivi sono influenzati da fattori bioculturali, dai quali dipendono anche i diversi modi di concepire il singolo individuo e di correlare il Self al contesto in cui assume consistenza la sua identità. Nello specifico: la natura collettivista delle società asiatiche promuove una concezione interdipendente del Sé ed è compatibile con una visione del mondo focalizzata sul contesto; viceversa, la natura individualista delle società occidentali enfatizza una concezione indipendente del Sé e comporta una visione del mondo focalizzata su singole entità isolate dal loro contesto. Tutto questo ha necessariamente delle conseguenze anche a livello di formattazione del racconto; di qui l'enucleazione delle differenze morfologiche sussistenti tra due macroaree geo-narratologiche del mondo: Occidente ed Estremo Oriente.
