Proporre oggi una riflessione a più voci su cosa stiano diventando i Visual Studies all'interno del panorama italiano e, in particolar modo, delle accademie di belle arti significa sottoporre a un questionamento radicale la suddivisione disciplinare classica tanto tra le varie metodologie storico-critiche quanto tra i differenti approcci (storiografici, sociologici, filosofici, ecc.) alle immagini. L'intento è stato, quindi, quello di chiamare a raccolta un numero significativo di voci differenti per interrogarsi su cosa significhi oggi occuparsi di Visual Studies, quali siano le poste in gioco e le potenzialità di questi studi. Sul fondo della ricerca si staglia il panorama di una proliferazione di immagini mai conosciuta dalla storia dell'umanità e la trasformazione antropologica che questa iperproduzione porta con sé. Sul crinale di questo nuovo e oscuro sapere sembrano convivere la fine dell'arte e la nascita di una società dell'immagine (o iconosfera), le quali, sovrapponendosi l'una all'altra, inizio e fine indistinguibili e confusi, danno vita a una "scienza senza nome" capace, forse, di indagare le culture visive del nuovo millennio e l'uomo che ne emerge.
