Il volume documenta il fatto che oggi le fiction "fanno bene" e ne spiega a lungo le ragioni, mentre in passato gli effetti erano considerati negativi, come appare evidente dal case-study dedicato ai lettori normanni di Madame Bovary e al gioco di identificazioni incrociate cui essi hanno dato luogo.
