Questo libro analizza La Chute de la maison Usher (1928) alla luce del pensiero sul fi lm elaborato da Jean Epstein. A partire dal contesto culturale in cui l'opera è nata e da un profilo del cineasta, esamina l'intrecciarsi di teoria e pratica del cinema attraverso alcune figure: architetture, ritratti, specchi, metamorfosi. Se da un lato la trama presenta temi tipicamente epsteiniani â contiguitĂ di vita e morte, sensibilitĂ privilegiata di alcuni caratteri, fascino inquieto e morboso dell'oscuritĂ â, dall'altro compare un ordito composto dalle sue teorie sul film: fotogenia come relazione inedita tra immagine e realtĂ , cinema come rivelazione della natura simbolica delle cose, sentire del corpo come strumento di conoscenza. Il volume mostra come Epstein delinei un vero e proprio palinsesto in cui immagine e filosofia trovano una consonanza inattesa.
