This new book provides PE teachers with practical lesson plans for teaching movement at every elementary grade level. The book's movement and skill theme-based approach, which differs from the typical activity-based approaches found in many schools, helps students develop overall health and well-being regardless of sports interests and hobbies. Each lesson plan is broken down into subsections to illustrate the physical, cognitive, and affective benefits, the central theme or concept to be explored, the grade level, and the equipment needed. By sequencing these lesson plans so that students develop general body awareness and coordination before finer motor skills—like throwing and catching—the author offers a model of PE instruction that will promote healthy lifestyle choices long after graduation.

This collection of movement education and skill-themed lesson plans was created for those preservice and in-service teachers interested in teaching elementary school children motor skills and concepts using movement education and the skill-themes approach (Graham, Holt-Hale, McEwen, & Parker, 1980). For this book’s purposes, the former is for Kindergarten through third-grade students, while the latter is for Grades 4 and 5. My 30+ years as a physical educator, administrator, and higher education faculty, in addition to my research (Gosset, 2015), tell me that the majority of elementary school physical education teachers teach movements and sport skills by units, which is typically referred to as the multi-activity approach, rather than by themes (e.g., hop, jump, etc.), dances (e.g., line/square, etc.), sport skills, and sports, as well as their accompanying strategies are typically each taught once yearly in a series of lessons. These lessons are often seasonally (climate) based, and teachers may use the same equipment for each grade. This can be convenient for the instructor but may not be developmentally appropriate for all students.
My research (Gosset, 2015), however, found that more upper elementary students had a better attitude (enjoyment and value) toward physical education in classes taught using the skill-themes approach than those in classes taught using the multiactivity approach. Skill-themes are essentially fundamental motor patterns that are used in games, gymnastics, and sports. These patterns are combined and modified into more specialized skills once the basic motor skills become automatic to the children. Schmidt’s schema theory (Schmidt, 1975) suggests that repeating, or revisiting, a skill in different contexts allows for skill transfer due to the similarity in motor patterns. In other words, lessons on the skill of throwing with a round ball would be done several times yearly in different contexts, such as simply throwing to a target or partner or throwing for distance. These lessons would not be consecutive using the skill-themes approach but might be weeks or months apart. Throwing with oblong balls, such as footballs, is also taught using similar activities, because throwing an oblong ball uses the same basic motor pattern as throwing the round ball. Additional examples include a baseball swing, a two-handed tennis backhand, a soccer or basketball dribble. The first of these additional examples are similar motor patterns, while the second is an example of a conceptual skill, that is, the application of light force to keep an object under control.
