B Job description and analysis of tasks
MartinCrafts have been asked to provide an estimate for decorating a lounge which has been allowed to deteriorate badly due to lack of maintenance. At a preliminary visit, two of their decorators, Penny and David, took the following room dimensions and made a list of the tasks which would have to be carried out.
Room dimensions
• the room is rectangular – 6.9 m in length by 4.7 m in width
• the height is constant throughout the room at 2.45 m
• there are two doors (0.75 m by 1.95 m) at either end of the 6.9 m partition wall
each door is 500 mm in from the corner of the room
• one window is situated on each 4.7 m wall of the lounge, measuring 1.05 m by 2.4 m
• the windows are positioned 1 m from the floor
• there is 50 mm architrave around each door and 50 mm cover fillets around each window
• the skirting board measures 125 mm in depth and runs round the whole room.
The preliminary visit done by Penny and David indicated that the walls and ceiling would require stripping completely and repairing where necessary. All paintwork will need to be burnt-off and reduced to the bare wood before re-painting. They drew up the following list:
• all walls to be stripped and sized
• all walls to be wall-papered
• the ceiling to be cleaned and textured
• 150 mm coving to be fitted
• the ceiling and coving to be given three coats of white emulsion
• the doors are to be stripped, primed, undercoated and glossed on one side to specification
• the windows are to be stripped, primed, undercoated and glossed on the inside
• all skirtings, architraves and coverfillets are to be stripped, primed, undercoated and glossed to specification.
C Cost of materials
Penny’s and David’s next task is to find the cost of materials from their suppliers. The prices given are without VAT added.
Emulsion
£25 per 5 litres (L)
Wallpaper
£5.45 per roll
Primer
£3.59 per L
Undercoat
£7.79 per 2.5 L
Gloss finish
£4.45 per L
Artex texture
£8.99 per 25 kg bag
Coving
£15.95 per 10 m pack
Size
£1.55 per packet
D Other considerations
After more meetings with the customer and considering the quality of the tasks with their manager, Penny and David make a list of important facts which will have to be taken into consideration:
• the wallpaper to be used is standard width at 540 mm wide and comes in 10 m length rolls. The pattern recurs every 500 mm so this must be accounted for in any calculations
• the cost of wallpapering is £10 per roll and the price of each roll is £10.95
• the packets of size cover 10 m2 per packet
• the coverage of 5 L of emulsion is 35 m2
• the coverage of 1 L of primer is 5 m2 of bare wood
• the coverage of 2.5 L of undercoat is 10 m2
• the coverage of 1 L of gloss coat is 6 m2
• artex covers 1 m2 per 1 kilogram
• cost of applying artex is £1.75 per 1 m2
• coving wastage of 15%
• cos...
