Operations management

The operations management section of this Collection contains 14 cases and extended exercises. There are four overarching themes presented in this section:
  • Information technology and its relationship to risk (cases 1.1 and 1.2) and service operations (case 1.5);
  • Manufacturing and production issues such as business process reengineering (case 1.3), production layout and process flows (cases 1.7 and 1.9) and quality (case 1.13);
  • Production planning for aggregate demand and forecasting (cases 1.6, 1.8 and 1.14), financial analysis and planning of operations (cases 1.10, 1.11 and 1.12); and
  • Sustainability as it pertains to services and public sector operations (cases 1.4 and 1.6).
These themes and topics address the challenges noted in the introduction of increasing costs, time compression to produce and deliver goods, product complexity, demand for quality of performance and service, risk, disruption and security, and the impact of operations management on the natural environment.
