YEARS THREE AND FOUR
Spelling, punctuation and structure
Spelling ace
• To spell simple words correctly. |
You need two players, some paper, a pen and scissors. An adult would be helpful to adjudicate!
Cut some paper into 26 similar pieces – one for each letter of the alphabet.
Write each letter on one of the pieces and then make separate groups for the vowels and the consonants.
Turn each piece face down and decide who goes first.
Player 1 selects six pieces, including one or two vowels, and turns them over to display the letters.
Player 1 must make a word using each letter as desired. (Tip – they can miss some letters out or use them more than once if they want to!)
One point is awarded for each letter they have used in a correct spelling. There are two extra points if they can put the word in a sentence.
Swap over. The first player to 20 points wins.

Column 1 is for words of one letter. Column 2 is for words with two letters.
Column 3 is for words with 3 letters and so on. The foundations of the wall have already been laid. You need to build on the X at the bottom of each column.
Decide who is going first and ask them to choose a column. They will need to consider tactics because ten points are awarded to the player who completes the last brick in the column. No points are awarded for individual bricks.
Player 1 should spell out any word they like, as long as it has the correct number of letters, and claim the next brick in the column by adding their initials if their spelling was correct.
Player 2 then chooses a column and repeats the exercise. They should aim to claim the next brick by adding their initials.
The game continues, with players taking t...
