About this book

Handbook of Edible Weeds contains detailed descriptions and illustrations of 100 edible weeds, representing 100 genera of higher plant species. Some of the species are strictly American, but many are cosmopolitan weeds. Each account includes common names recognized by the Weed Science Society of America, standard Latin scientific names, uses, and distribution (geographic and ecological). Cautionary notes are included regarding the potential allergenic or other harmful properties of many of the weeds.

Indexes
Index to Plant Names
In the text, 100 genera of weeds are arranged, alphabetically by generic names. Most of you readers, not familiar with generic names, will find the common names in the Index to Plant Names. I have used the scientific generic name rather than the highly variable and sometimes confusing array of common names. In most cases, more than one edible species occurs in the United States representatives of the genus, though the account may single out what I view to be most important. For some of these genera, one can find dozens of common names, but I have chosen what I believe to be the most important or well-studied species, using one or more of the more prevalent common names. That common name may belong to all species in the genus or just one species in the genus.
