Observation

The seashore is a fascinating place for the children to visit. There are so many different sounds and smells and sights for them to experience. Providing sensible precautions are taken in terms of safety issues, then the trip could prove to be a stimulating one for a whole scheme of work. Alternatively, your home..made seaside could be a fun place to explore through the use of imaginative sand and water activities.

Preparation

  • image
Make a preparatory visit to your nearest suitable beach for the children in your setting. Inspect the shoreline for rock pools, sand dunes, sand, shells and pebbles, small caves, as well as facilities such as toilets. Check out the proximity of the coastguard, lifeboat station and first..aid services in case of emergencies. Plan the activities before the main trip, bearing in mind changes in the weather. Check the tides, as nothing would be more disappointing than arriving with a group of children eager to dig in the sand, only to find the sea is covering the whole beach, or conversely is so far out that the children would have to walk miles to paddle in the sea, or even find a rock pool. Look up the bye, laws to see if it is against the law to remove any materials from the beach.

Arrange a date for the visit and make the booking with your transport providers.

  • image
Let the parents and carers know about the sea topic from the beginning and encourage them to take the children to the library to look for books about sea creatures, both in the sea and along the shore.
  • image
If your children live in close proximity to the sea, ask parents to encourage the children to keep a diary to record sightings of sea creatures on family visits to the beach. The record can be pictorial and/or have a written description, which the adults and children can create together.
  • image
Prepare your outdoor sandpit and/or indoor sand tray with fresh sand and begin to collect resources for use throughout the topic.

On the trip to the seashore, decide how and when the digital camera is to be used. For example, will the children be shown how to use the camera and have easy access to it, or will the adults keep control of the camera and accompany the childre...
