Preparation

Decide where you are going to take the children on their bear hunt. If it is a nice day, outside would be best.

Prepare the area. Hide the bear in his cave.

Create obstacles for the children that they cannot go over or under but have to go through. You will need five plus the cave. The objectives are to tell the story in a fun and exciting way, and for the children to understand what going through something means so that the same obstacle may be used more than once if you lack space or equipment. If you want to be really brave, go outside in Wellingtons and use Tuff spots (builders' trays) for the water and mud. You could also put twigs and leaves in one tray for the forest. Be creative and make the most of the resources you do have.

Read the story with the children the day before you plan to do this activity and tell them what will be happening tomorrow! If the children are going to need to bring in their Wellingtons, do let parents and carers know well in advance either by sending a letter home or putting a notice on the setting notice-board. Remind the children at the end of the story.
