What follows is a review of the first 10 of 20 vocabulary terms in groups so you can easily study them.
Plus, read the example sentence so you will know exactly how to use your new term!
Keywords: Infer, Evaluate, Anomaly, Capricious, Élan
1. Infer
Infer is a verb that means to conclude by reasoning.
Ex: Do you infer from my poor clothes that I am a pauper?
Another common form is the noun: inference.
On these three exams, you will be asked to make your own inferences.
Now you can use the word yourself in your spoken or written responses.
2. Evaluate
Evaluate is a verb that means to estimate the nature, quality, ability or significance of something.
Ex: Did the jury carefully evaluate the evidence?
Evaluate is a nice word to use in your essay responses.
A synonym is to analyze.
3. Anomaly
Anomaly is a noun that signifies a deviation from the normal or common order or form or rule.
Ex: Will the extreme cold last year be an anomaly in the global warming debate?
Another form is the adjective anomalous.
So, use the word anomaly to talk about something that is unique or does not fit a particular pattern.
4. Capricious
Capricious is an adjective that means to be determined by chance or impulse rather than by necessity.
Ex: Our capricious professor gave us a quiz the day before the final exam!
Another form is the noun caprice.
I’d say that the adjective form – capricious – is the more common usage.
So instead of using random or perhaps unpredictable just use capricious instead.
A synonym is whimsical.
Finally, élan.
5. Élan
Élan is a noun meaning enthusiastic and assured vigor and liveliness.
Ex: The tennis star easily defeated her opponent with élan.
Yes, you might notice that this is a French word; there are many in the English language.
So, when you want to talk about energy, zest, or enthusiasm, use élan instead.
Here is your second set of five powerful vocabulary words.
Keywords: Epitome, Litany, Juxtaposition, Paradox, Red herring
6. Epitome
Your first word is - epitome - a standard or typical example.
Ex: The Hotel Beaujolais was the epitome of 18th century French architecture.
Another form is the verb: epitomize.
7. Litany
A litany is any long and tedious address or recital.
Ex: When Maria arrived late to class, she only offered a litany of reasons.
8. Juxtaposition
A juxtaposition is two elements or words side by side and letting the reader or viewer compare them.
Ex: The juxtaposition of the bright colors on the dark background made the painting appear three dimensional.
The verb form is to juxtapose.
9. Paradox
A paradox is a contradictory situation.
Ex: The fact that Mr. Hunt hates gold but owns the largest gold mine is a paradox.
Another form is the adjective: paradoxical.
10. Red Herring
A red herring is a diversion intended to distract attention from the main issue.
Ex: Her lawyer argued she had had a bad childhood, a red herring in the eyes of the jury.
People often use red herrings in their arguments to try to distract you and win an argument. So, beware!
