The object of this unconscionably long index is to enable readers of all classes to refer, compare, and (it is hoped) understand, without having to move from the arm-chair. Comparatively few "general" readers take notice of foot-notes, and still fewer are willing—if indeed able—to consult the foot-note references to original authors; many of whom, again, have written in languages and books inaccessible to the exceptionally favoured individuals who might (if willing) take the trouble to hunt them up.
