Acting 2.0

Doing Work that Gets Work in a High-Tech World

About this book

Anthony Abeson s actor-training is an amalgam of his work with Peter Brook, Jerzy Grotowski, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Harold Clurman. Many of his students have gone on to successful careers in theatre, film and television. In his book "Acting 2.0: Doing Work that Gets Work in a High-Tech World" Mr. Abeson discusses the consequences of the American acting culture s emphasis on using rather than developing talent. In the opening of his book he says "I want to empower you with practical tools with which to do good work that gets work in the room work on the stage and screen that inspires all of us, that arouses not prurience or violence but that precious something, intangible but of inestimable value, that is being destroyed from our lives: our humanity.

Now
it’s
as
if
we’ve
just
had
coaching
session,
and
it’s
time
to
retape
yourself,
which
presents
another
danger:
trying
to
“do
it
right”
by
trying
to
act
every
single
note
given
above.
This
is
truly
the
best
way
to
kill
your
acting
impulse
and
any
joy
you
might
have
in
the
room.
The
coaching
is
like
weight
training
to
strengthen
your
forearm
so
your
tennis
serve
is
faster.
It
makes
sense.
What
wouldn’t
make
sense
would
be
if
you
brought
the
weight
out
onto
the
tennis
court
and
held
onto
it
as
you
played.
And
this
is
ultimately
about
playing
part,
scene.
Having
been
coached,
go
in
there
and
play;
some
of
the
choices
we’ve
made
will
stick,
and
some
won’t.
No
worries—nobody
bats
.1000,
or
even
.500
for
that
matter.
But
when
you
compare
the
before
and
after
tapes
of
this
scene,
think
you’ll
agree
that
your
second
version
has
more
often
than
not
turned
the
lines
into
life,
and
while
there
are
million
folks
who
can
say
lines,
those
who
can
create
life
in
the
petri
dish
of
the
room
or
on
set
are
very
special
indeed.
