In his remarkably perceptive book entitled The Life and Times of the Patriarchs, William H. Thomson, MD, LLD (son of William M. Thomson, author of The Land and the Book) draws our attention to the fact that the "story of the life of Jacob and of his family occupies more than half of the book of Genesis." He returned many years later to face new challenges, and one by one God took pains to remove from his life the things that were impediments to his spiritual growth.
