Este tercer tomo de las Memorias de un hombre de acción está formado por tres narraciones.La primera se titula La culta Europa (amores, hambre, peste y filosofía) y es un fragmento de las memorias de un oficial español, Ignacio Arteaga, preso en Francia. El objeto de este episodio es explicar la génesis de las ideas liberales en España después de la guerra de la Independencia, y paradójicamente, Baroja lo hace desde la óptica de un personaje ferozmente absolutista como Arteaga. El viaje de Arteaga, Riego y Aviraneta de Francia a Holanda está hecho a base de guías antiguas y de estampas.La segunda narración se titula Una intriga tenebrosa (Los hombres de la conspiración del triángulo). Esta conspiración, liderada por Renovales, la cuenta el barón de Oiquina en Paris, en el Restaurant del Rocher de Cancale. En ella, la parte novelesca se mezcla con la historia. Para la parte histórica, Baroja recopiló abundante documentación en el Archivo Histórico Nacional y en otros archivos, además de en los libros de historia.La tercera narración, La Mano cortada (historia de la tierra caliente), totalmente novelada, se desarrolla en Méjico. Perseguido en España, Aviraneta se refugia en ese país, en el que tiene parientes, y se reúne con ellos con el fin de hacer algún dinero invirtiendo y trabajando en proyectos mineros. No obstante, su carácter le impulsa a participar en varias aventuras de distinta índole. Al final, regresa a España.
