An Kant spalten sich in der katholischen Moraltheologie die Geister: Den einen gilt er als Galionsfigur einer willkommenen Ethik der Autonomie, den anderen als Vorläufer einer Infragestellung der theologischen Ethik. Die Studie bringt in diese Diskussion einen weiteren Aspekt ein, indem sie rekonstruiert, wie Kant die Relevanz der christlichen Religion für das moralische Selbstverständnis des Menschen bestimmt. In der Analyse der Religionsschrift und der neueren Quellen zu den Ethikvorlesungen zeigt sie auf, dass Religion für Kant nicht nur für die Lehre vom höchsten Gut, d. h. bezüglich des Resultats der moralischen Praxis, von Bedeutung ist. Vielmehr werfen auch die Mängel beim Streben nach moralischer Vollkommenheit (Heiligkeit) für ihn die Frage auf, inwiefern der Mensch die Unterstützung durch einen göttlichen Beistand benötigt. Die Studie kommt am Ende der Textanalysen zu dem doppelten Ergebnis, dass Kants moralphilosophische Gnadenlehre durch innere Aporien belastet ist und markante Differenzen zu theologisch-ethischen Grundbestimmungen der Gnade aufweist.
