World's End

About this book

All's fair in love, war and videogames. November 1998. As the war in Kosovo plays out, two families in London fight for their own freedom. But freedom takes courage and all Ben wants to do is finish his new video game. A subtle rumination on single parenthood, sexuality and video games, James Corley's debut play is a deceptively gentle and achingly tender portrait of lives lived in the heart of the city, yet squarely on the world's edges.

SCENE ONE
November 26th, 1998.
Around 3pm – the light is fading.
A walkway of a block of flats. High up. Two doors, number 11 and number 13, stand flanking each other. Cardboard boxes of various sizes laden with brown tape and felt tip scrawl block their entrances.
Out front is the River Thames, hinted at by the sound of seagulls.
YLLI, a strikingly present energy with dark features, is standing by the door to his flat (no. 11). He is wearing a thin dark suit.
YLLI: (Calling.) Besnik!
Besnik!
BESNIK: (From within, in English.) What?
YLLI: (In Albanian.) What’s all this?
BESNIK: What?
YLLI: What’s all this rubbish out here?
BESNIK: I can’t hear you, Dad.
YLLI: What you say?
BESNIK: I’m on the toilet!
YLLI slams the door. He makes his way through the boxes before noticing a marble head on the floor.
He picks it up and turns it over – checking if it’s marble.
YLLI: (In Albanian.) Not bad.
BEN enters unseen. BEN is a nervous presence who questions everything – including his own mind. He is holding a box with “Ben’s machine” written on it. He stops at seeing YLLI. His posture lowers. He turns to walk back.
YLLI: Excuse me –
BEN: Oh hi –
There is a second of tension as the two lock eyes before YLLI laughs.
YLLI: This is all yours, huh?
BEN: Yes – it is – sorry –
YLLI: Forgive me – I’m sorry. I was just admiring –
YLLI puts the marble head down.
I forget – been empty for long time, you see. I’m used to no neighbour.
BEN: Oh I see…
YLLI: Here, Let me take for you –
BEN: Oh no it’s OK –
YLLI: No no let me –
BEN: Honestly I can –
YLLI: (Firmly.) Please let me, ha?
BEN lets YLLI take the box from him.
YLLI: You have much more stuff?
BEN: Yes. Some more (---) bits.
YLLI: Really? My God. You have a family?
BEN doesn’t understand.
YLLI: Or with friend? Girlfriend? Ah! (Indicating the marble head.)
I see – real marble – lucky guy.
BEN: Oh no – that’s not. It’s me and my mum. My mum and
I… are moving in – together.
YLLI: Mother son. I see. I see. (Putting out his hand.) Ylli.
BEN: (Shaking it.) Ben.
YLLI: Ben, huh?
BEN: Yeah. (---) Nice to meet you.
YLLI, still holding BEN’s hand and looking at him intently.
YLLI: How old? I have son your age I think.
BEN: Nineteen?
YLLI: No way – same age! You two will be both friends, I think.
BEN: Oh. Maybe.
YLLI: His name is Besnik.
BEN: (---) Oh cool.
YLLI: Forgive me, Ben, but you look older.
BEN: Yeah I know. Always have. When I was six, people thought I was ten. It’s because I’m a worrier. I worry (---) a lot. The lines (pointing to his forehead) that might be (---) why.
YLLI: You have a classical face, that’s why.
BEN doesn’t know what to do with that.
A moment. YLLI is still holding BEN’s hand.
From the stairwell, VIV’s voice, refined and unself-conscious, is heard.
VIV: Ben? Can you help? –
BEN: Oh – (calling back) coming –
VIV: I can’t lift this on my own –
YLLI: Your mum. She needs help?
BEN: She’s fine, I’ve got it – thanks –
VIV: Ben? Are you there?
BEN: (Calling back.) Yes –
YLLI: (Walking to the stairwell.) I go. The lift still not working, huh? Oh I know. It’s crazy. Nearly a year now. (Calling to VIV.) I’m coming, don’t worry (To BEN.) I tell the people downstairs, the head office or whatever, and every time they say they will fix – assholes, f...
