PRELUDE

EVERYONE:
We’re looking at a girl.
A girl.
Maybe not a girl.
Maybe a woman.
But she is definitely someone that is called “Girl”.
She’s just been arrested.
She was found in a bathroom – .
In another person’s bathroom –
A person whose house she must’ve broken into –
She’s held for a while in the station –
A few hours.
And then she gets the bus back home.
Her childhood home that is –
She’s moved back recently for whatever reason – unemployment?
Who knows.
She didn’t call her mum to pick her up.
No.
She called her brother who’s in Thailand.
Yeah.
For her one phone call she called her brother on the other side of the world.
No one said it was smart –
It’s what she did though.
Her mum finds out about it while at work.
At about 11am she finishes replying to every email with URGENT in the title.
And then she gets a phone call.
It’s her son.
Her daughter has been arrested.
She wonders whether she even wants to ask why.
When her brother got the call in Thailand he had no idea what to say
Later –
Hours later he’ll say that the minute he heard the call –
The second he heard it ringing he felt the dread –
This is not true.
At first he felt tired and annoyed.
Only when he heard the voice did he feel the dread.
His boyfriend however – he did feel the dread – Almost immediately –
As soon as he heard it ringing he thought –
This Is Not Good.
On the phone she tells him about what’s happened.
And when she hangs up there’s one word that sticks.
One word she says that rings in his ears.
After he heard her say it he sat up in bed and pulled his knees as close to his chest as his joints would allow –
And it is so fucking hot.
And he just thinks.
He thinks.
How the fuck am I gonna tell mum?
Both of them –
Her mum and brother –
Both imagine her coming home –
Imagine her coming up to the front door and
imagine her looking into the mirror in the hall –
And both hope –
Both really hope –
That as she looks at herself in the mirror –
She thinks –
How did I get here?

HER. ONE

HER:
I’m watching TV.
It’s 7
7 in the evening.
I’m supposed to be going out tonight –
Out with friends.
I woke up to a text this morning asking if I wanted to go out and I didn’t know if I did – I waited and watched TV all day and then at 6 I thought maybe it would do me some good – So I text back and I said ok cool where are you going?
And they told me it’s the pub on the end of my street.
So that’s easy.
It’s just these two people I went to school with –
We’ve always stayed in contact a bit
Last night I was up till 3 –
I said...
