Us Against Whatever
About this book
Anna is starting to think she made a mistake in moving to Hull. Steph sees her city changing and misses her dad. Both are looking for somewhere to call home and something to believe in. And Sheila? She's determined to bring people together again, the only way she knows how – karaoke! 'Cause what we need right now is to get up on our feet, grab a mic together and belt out a ballad after a pint or five. From Pride in Poland and Windass at Wembley, to City of Culture and Brexit Britain, Us Against Whatever is an electrifying cabaret about the places we keep in our hearts, with support from Hull's finest voices – you!

SCENE ONE
SONG – A Sea of Black and Amber
(Our MC throws Hull City scarves, posters, banners and tiger masks out to the audience who create a sea of black and amber. The rest of the cast burst onto the stage with an excited energy, singing and transforming the space, taking us back to that day in 2008…)
ALL
A sea of black and amber and black and amber and black and amber
A sea of black and amber and black and amber and black and amber
And hope in my heart that today might be the day
A change is gonna come
A change is gonna come

2008. The world is in the middle of a building shit storm and Hull’s weathered its fair share. But this summer a feeling has been ballooning in this city right and it’s been a while but we think we might all recognise it as hope.
As a great big ball of fuck you hope that’s built over the last few months with each goal we’ve scored and each time we’ve cheered and today the whole city is pulsing with it, up and down.
Because today Hull are gunna beat Bristol City at Wembley and make it into the Premier League.
Because today we’re gunna put two fingers up at the rest of the country.
Because today this number one Crap Town (2003) doesn’t yet know if we’ll make it but we’re drunk on the headiness of the possibility we even could.
And why are we starting here? Why does today matter?
Because there is a thread that ties together hope and fear and this city has spent its life dangling from the edge of it.
Because hope is dangerous alright, because if you dare to hope, if you dare to dream, then you’ve further to fall.
And right now hope is growing, right now we’re on the cusp ready to explode. And you need to know what that feels like to be able to understand what happens when it’s gone.
(Music starts to grow underneath the speech…)
Nowhere can you feel it more than in my bar. Which is rammed and waiting with faces new and old. And it’s right here that we first meet our heroes. Drumroll please.
(STEPH is illuminated in the spotlight.)

(Spoken.) Cheers Steph.
(Sung.) Steph has been raised on low expectations,
There’s no pressure on her from her relations
School was fine most of the time
And home was fine most of the time
And Steph is fine
most of the time
most of the time
most of the time\
She’s coasted through life without having to make a choice
Now for the first time she’s having to find her own voice
But clocks tick and time turns,
Seas change and candles burn,
Steph hopes and hopes and hopes
That today might be the day
A change is gonna come
LET’S GO
STEPH
(Spoken to the beat, still stood in her spotlight.)
Sixteen years of making do,
Sixteen years of getting by
Sixteen years in this Crap Town
Bringing my aspiration, ambition down
But if the city can dream then so can I
If the city can win then why can’t I
Maybe today’s the day I start again
I’m filling my head with ‘what if’ and ‘when’
The difference between now and then
When this city started to dream again
Believe again
See the chance to achieve again
’Cos
We’re on our way to Wembley
With dreams of what this can be
