Merlin and the Woods of Time was first performed on July 14th 2011 in Grosvenor Park, Chester, as part of the open-air summer season produced by Chester Performs. The play was staged in repertory with As You Like It by William Shakespeare.

HERALD: Once in the woods of a world you know
A story grew where the lime-trees grow
And it grew till you sat where you sit right now
Between a first word and a final bow
And when it was over, I heard it cry
‘Why are we stopping?’ Don’t ask me why…
WATERCUP and LILY. WATERCUP sits, exhausted. LILY signs to him.
WATERCUP: Why are we stopping…Don’t ask me why,
Lily, I can’t walk any more, we’ve walked
since doomsday afternoon is what it feels like.
How can we eat if we stop…We have no food,
no money… I know we need
a place of many people, I know we need
a crowd to sell our medicines to, I know
you’re hungry, but I’m starving! I’m fading…
