All We Ever Wanted Was Everything

About this book

Meet Leah and Chris; raised on Harry Potter, New Labour and a belief that one day they would be as 'special' as their parents promised. But what happens when those dreams don't become reality? Follow Leah and Chris over these twenty years as they realise the future they were promised as children hasn't turned out as they hoped, against the backdrop of an asteroid heading for earth. Told through performance and live music on multiple stages, with support from a different Humber Street Sesh band every night, this is Welly like you've never seen it before.

TRACK 11a: 2017 // ā€œWE’RE NOT GOING ANYWHEREā€
Saturday 24th June 2017
(Ten years pass. The sights and sounds of Broken Britain give way to a more electronic, digital world. Donald Trump is President of the United states and Theresa May is negotiating Britain’s exit from the EU… We are now in 2017’s Brexit Britain.)
The MC Another ten years pass. The moon circles the earth three thousand six hundred and fifty times, each time more turbulent than the last. It’s 2017 in Brexit Britain and Hull is the UK City of Culture. Blades, blue people and belief. Right, now take your phones out and film me, film me. Let’s do this!
Woah woah
We’re doing what we want to
Woah woah
And no one’s gonna stop us
Woah woah
We’re fucking immortal
And we’re not going anywhere
We’re not going anywhere
(We see the 2017 versions of CHRIS and LEAH, on their smartphones. They look older.)
Chris finishes his degree, but unfortunately for him he does not do it that spectacularly
He doesn’t become a psychologist
But he does become something his contemporaries take the piss out of when they’re pissed
Chris becomes a councillor.
Who once helped a woman feel better after a stranger pounced on her
He also fell in love
Not with anyone he’d want to fall in love with
But with someone who loved him despite the fact he’s a div. He married Carly. A woman with such fragility and mediocrity she thought Chris loving her was an act of chivalry.
And she does that because no one’s needed her the way Chris does -
At some point average Chris and average Carly have an average kid called Collin
Who’s fine enough, they think
Chris loves Collin
Collin gives him meaning
And he’s A Good Dad.
But there’s nothing special about Collin, much like there was nothing special about Chris
So, to prevent Collin from making the same mistake of wishing and scheming Chris discourages Collin from dreaming
Chris is happy
That’s the important thing.
Woah woah
We’re doing what we want to
Woah woah
And no one’s gonna stop us
Woah woah
We’re fucking immortal
And we’re not going anywhere
We’re not going anywhere
On the other side of Hull, Leah has found her fortune - but at what cost?
Just because she’s rich doesn’t mean she’s fine
She sells energy to companies and from time to time she bullshits.
They could google it
And Leah knows
But Leah is more in love with the idea of people seeing her be rich than she is with the idea of being kind.
She puts pictures on Facebook of her in nice cars
Clubs
Champagne
And occasionally
but only occasionally
She tags her best friend and colleague Holly Moffit in them by ā€œmistakeā€ to help bury the rage where she can’t see it.
Also when she’s feeling particularly brash she tags her buddies from Build-a-Bear in the hope they’ll shit themselves with jealousy.
She’s obsessed with the idea that people thought she’d failed and is determined to show how she overcame it all to live the life of luxury.
Our heroes are still not looking above their heads.
At the giant fucking asteroid that has seen the hatefulness of humanity and has decided it’s destiny is to obliterate it completely, like a distant cousin did to the dinosaurs. Probably. She wants to put an end to the selfishness. The trouble. And give Earth a chance to build itself back up from the rubble.
