About this book
Copenhagen 1940. Zack and Nikolai are happy in love and enjoy a blissful lifestyle on the gay scene until they are arrested during the Nazi invasion of Denmark. Zack, an American attaché with diplomatic immunity goes free.
But Nikolai is handed over to the notorious Dr Carl Vaernet who claims to have discovered a "cure" for homosexuality. Encouraged by the Nazis to conduct cruel experiments on homosexuals, Vaernet left them mutilated for life. The choice was to suffer this torture or die in a concentration camp. A Holocaust story which resonates through history.

ACT ONE
A member of the Royal Danish Medical Association addresses the audience.
PRESENTER: | Good day Gentlemen. (Looks around.) Very good! Thank you for attending this special general meeting as requested by Doctor Carl Peter Værnet. The floor is all yours Doctor. |
(There is no applause just some rumbling chat. The member of the Royal Danish Medical Association exits as DOCTOR CARL PETER VÆRNET, 30-40s, walks into in a single, harsh white light. He’s a plain-looking man with insignificant features and slick back hair; however there is a sharp, piercing glint in his eye. He looks around at his audience, clears his throat and speaks.) | |
VÆRNET: | Thank you and thank you to the Royal Danish Medical Association for allowing me this opportunity to address you. (Beat.) I have been a member of the association for over ten years and my hormone therapy research has been generously funded and applauded. I have made great strides in micro short wave treatments of cancer and other diseases. Three years ago I became a member of the Danish Nationalist Socialists, since then my funding has been cut and my general practice has diminished considerably. I don’t stand before you asking for handouts but to urge you to support me in a new vital treatment for a disease that is threatening the very fibre of the Danish nation. (Beat.) It’s the question of homosexuality. (Beat.) It can no longer be accepted that what happens in private remains private, all things which take place in the sexual sphere are not the private affair of the individual but signify the life and death of our nation. Therefore we must be absolutely clear, that if we continue to have this burden in Denmark, that will be the end of our Danish ways. We cannot simply rip them out like weeds and throw them onto a heap and burn them nor can we imprison them because when the homosexual comes out of prison he’s still a homosexual. (Beat.) Their theory is that it’s not a choice, that it’s natural, such a theory is misguided and propaganda. |
